Lamp Posts and Sprinklers for Your Gene Kelly Moments

!±8± Lamp Posts and Sprinklers for Your Gene Kelly Moments

If you're a Gene Kelly fan like me, you relish the days and nights when it rains and run to find your old yellow rain slicker and umbrella and head to the closest light post to do your rain dance. But if you live in Southern California (again like me) where it doesn't really rain all that often, your Gene Kelly moments are quite limited. However, there are a couple creative ways for you to get your "Singin' in the Rain" moments on no matter what season it is.

The first method and probably one of the funnier ones is to suit up in your rain slicker and umbrella on a hot summer day and set off your neighborhood's local fire hydrant. Even though you may be looked upon strangely for dancing around in the middle of the street in front of the fire hydrant, wearing a rain slicker, the neighborhood kids might appreciate the strong spray of water. As fun as this method may sound, you should consider it a temporary method because someone is surely bound to call the fire department to shut off the water.

Which brings us to our next Gene Kelly method - get a moderately sized post mounted lantern in your front yard. Really, if you think about it, it might actually be a good idea to invest in a post mounted outdoor lantern for your home. Aside from being able to have as many Gene Kelly moments out in your front yard (complete with your own lawn sprinklers), you'll be able to light up your yard and let visitors know that you're home. And if you really want to get your Gene Kelly moment going, consider getting a hold of one of those plastic ring sprinklers to prolong your moment for as long as possible!

Before you embark on any of these Gene Kelly ideas, always remember to limit the amount of time you spend out in the "rain." Chances are, you'll either catch pneumonia by dancing in reclaimed water, and wasting water is never a good thing. Try to time all of this when you need to water the lawn or wash your cash; that way, you won't feel as bad running through the sprinklers so long as you're getting the lawn watered.

Timeless Beauty - Antique Bridge Lamps

!±8± Timeless Beauty - Antique Bridge Lamps

Back in the day, different types of lamps were a practical household necessity. In 1910 and through to the 1940s, a very popular lamp that was very popular was the antique "bridge" lamp. This lamp is a floor lamp that is unique with its arm that sticks out from the top of the body and base. This arm is referred to as the "bridge" of the lamp. The shade is then attached at the end of the bridge over the light bulb.

The bridge lamp was made specifically for the purpose of being able to direct light EXACTLY where it is supposed to go and not necessarily to light an entire room. Back when these lamps were created, the homes of many of the people were built to have very high ceilings which caused a great light in the room from the ceiling light, but the light was distributed throughout the whole room which created shadows below it. If you were to sit in a chair to read or sit at a desk in order to do some work, the shadow of the person or anything else near the subject, would make the light very dim and not at all bright enough to help with what task was being performed.

The light of the bridge lamp could be put by a chair or a desk and positioned so that the light would aim directly on the actual work or book that was being used. It was a very popular lamp for this purpose but also the antique bridge lamp became a favorite lamp to decorate the shade. With the shade hanging down, you were able to have a lot more freedom when it came to decorating.

The lamp shades of these lamps took a life of their own and there are so many different designs that have made their mark on this lamp. The most popular design is the tassels and beaded material that the show girls used to wear in the 1940s. They found that these tassels and the beaded fabric made the lamp stand out among anything else in a room. The way the tassels dangled below the shade with the light shining through them created a rather happy feeling to the people who were near them. The people could not help but touch the lamp and play with the hanging tassels on it!

This type of lamp design also allowed its owner to adjust the height of the stand and adjust the brightness of the light by having a three or four turn knob instead of the regular on and off switch. The antique bridge lamp is still a very popular lamp in today's world as well.

Choosing the Right Light Bulbs For Your Reading Lamp

!±8± Choosing the Right Light Bulbs For Your Reading Lamp

If the lamp you love, doesn't give off enough light, it's not worth buying. What bulbs should you use in your reading lamp? What wattage should you go with? Always check the power rating on a lamp before you purchase it. You'll want to buy a lamp that puts out enough light for the job at hand. If you need a lamp to brighten a very dark corner, don't buy one that can't take anything bigger than a 40 watt bulb.

You can use a lower watt bulb than what the lamp calls for, but never use, for example, a 150 watt bulb in a lamp that calls for a 60 watt bulb. This will make the lamp overheat, causing it to possibly short circuit, or it could even start a fire. Is your lamp intended to be used only with incandescent bulbs, or can you use halogen bulbs? Be smart and read the manufacturers information that comes with the lamp.

Halogen bulbs are a good choice, especially if you have a little difficulty with your vision. It will put out a bright, white light that's good for reading in even the darkest of rooms. Florescent bulbs are available in different shades so you'll want to find one that's white enough to read by. Be aware though that some people suffer from headaches when they spend their days under florescent lighting. If this is the case at your office, you might want to go with a softer lighting in your home reading space.

In general, in a room with no overhead lighting, you should have a good light source about every ten feet for sufficient reading light. Invest in one or two lamps that have the capacity to accept a 100 to 150 watt bulb, or consider using a 3-way bulb so you'll be adjust to the right light setting for any time of day or night.

Every desk in your home should have a small reading lamp place on it. A good desk lamp will have a cover that keeps the light focused on the paper. This will go a long way toward reducing eye strain, an important factor to consider when daily homework or take home work from the office is a nightly necessity.

Energy Efficient bulbs are good for the environment and good for your wallet. They can save you money and last a long time, cutting down on extra waste in landfills. Energy saving lamps use up to 80% less energy than traditional bulbs. There are many brands on the market to choose from; a good energy-efficient bulb can operate for up to 10,000 or longer.

How Do You Know If Your Tiffany Lamp Is Authentic?

!±8± How Do You Know If Your Tiffany Lamp Is Authentic?

How Do You Know If Your Tiffany Lamp Is Authentic? Nowadays, the term "Tiffany Lamp" is a more generic term, describing any stained glass lamp, but how do you know if your lamp is a genuine Tiffany Lamp, made by Tiffany Studios? It's not always easy. Tiffany Studios, established by Louis Comfort Tiffany, son of Charles Lewis Tiffany, owner of Tiffany & Co. (renowned for jewelry, fine silver and luxury goods), produced Tiffany Lamps from the 1890's through the 1930's, when Louis C. Tiffany died. These lamps are very rare and valuable, ranging anywhere from ,500 to over million dollars, with a gallery in New York (Macklowe Gallery) recently placing the price tag of .5 million dollars on a lamp in their collection. These lamps were all custom-made, with no two exactly alike. The lamps that demand a higher price tag tend to be the lamps that feature an array of vibrant colors and ornate patterns, especially those with intricate floral designs.

The simpler the lines and patterns, the less the lamp is worth. This is very much in part because the more complicated the patterns and colors were, the many more hours of work it took to complete. Although this article can help you come closer to a definitive answer as to whether or not you have an authentic Tiffany Lamp, you will still need to take your lamp to an expert, as there are many forgeries out there that can even give the most educated antique expert a run for their money so-to-speak. So what can you do to help determine if you should take your lamp to an expert? Here are some easy things to look for: Look closely at the shade. An original Tiffany Lamp will most likely have suffered at the very least a few fractures or cracks and if you tap the shade, you should hear the glass rattle. If each pane of glass is securely in place and there are no noticeable cracks, although not impossible, it is pretty safe to say that you do not have an original Tiffany.

Tiffany Lamps should almost always have a base that is stamped. Often the shade is also stamped and numbered. The stamp should read: TIFFANY STUDIOS in all caps and in a very basic font. If the font has any sort of flourish, like the small lines that come off of the sides of the horizontal line of the "T", this is a forgery. This is also true if the lamp is stamped "Tiffany & Co." as there were no lamps produced under this name.

Inspect the base. Most all Tiffany Lamp bases were made from bronze and because of the high price of bronze, the bases were made hollow with a lead ring in the base added for extra support. The bronze base will most likely also have experienced some color change over the years, namely a patina, but remember that this look is something that counterfeiters can easily reproduce. In addition, the on/off switch will most likely be a turnable paddle design or a small pull chain.

Light the lamp and look at the glass. One of the appealing qualities of an original Tiffany is the glass quality and type. The colors of the glass should appear as different colors when the lamp is turned on. If you have a legitimate Tiffany Lamp, you should also notice that there will be random panes of glass on your lamp that have specs of different colors on them. This is called confetti glass. More Tips: If you are thinking of buying a lamp because you suspect it is an authentic Tiffany Lamp or are told it is a Tiffany Lamp, do your due diligence and ask a ton of questions about it's history and how the dealer obtained the lamp. If the person you are buying the lamp from is selling it as an authentic, be sure to get a written guarantee.

If you are unable to get one, think twice about the purchase. Tiffany Lamps are revered for their beauty, and although owning an authentic Tiffany Lamp may be an impossibility for the majority of us, we can still enjoy their beauty by finding quality made reproductions as well as original designs created by skilled artisans that practice the hand-made craft using Louis Comfort Tiffany's original methods of construction.
